According to NFPA 70 (2011 edition), Article 517.18(B), hospital-grade receptacles are required in patient care areas. These receptacles must be tested after initial installation, replacement, or servicing to confirm their physical integrity, grounding continuity, correct polarity, and adequate retention force of the grounding blade.
For receptacles not listed as hospital-grade, particularly at patient bed locations and in areas where deep sedation or general anesthesia is administered, NFPA 99 (2012 edition), Section 6.3.4.1.3, mandates testing at intervals not exceeding 12 months. This routine testing ensures that all electrical outlets maintain the necessary safety standards to protect patients and staff.
